What Lars Jensen’s Africa journey can teach us about visibility, context, and decisions
A few days into the Syncro Sally Voyage, Lars Jensen told us about a road in Africa.
It came from an earlier piece of his analysis work: a three-lane highway connecting Djibouti to northern Ethiopia. New, built only about a year earlier, it had fundamentally changed the business case for moving cargo through the region.
The problem was that, at the time, the road did not appear in the places where people were looking. It was not on Google Maps. It did not show up in the research. People analysing the region from a distance were still working with an old assumption: that the route required a major detour, and therefore a different cost structure.
But the road was there.
For Lars, that is exactly the kind of gap this journey is meant to uncover. Africa is not a single logistics story. It is 54 countries, each with its own infrastructure, risks, opportunities, constraints, and pace of development. Some of the most important operational realities are not immediately visible from a spreadsheet, a map, or a report.
You have to get closer to the ground.
That is what Lars is doing with Sally, his expedition van, over the next 18 months. The journey began as a personal ambition more than 30 years ago: to travel from Denmark to South Africa. Over time, it became something larger. A personal expedition, but also a professional exploration of African logistics, trade corridors, ports, inland routes, borders, and the practical friction that shapes how goods move.
